ReplyDeleteFantastic day out on the water with Joe. First time ever fishing for sturgeon, managed to get 12 fish. Joe really knows his stuff and I would definitely recommend a day out with him to get up close to these amazing prehistoric creatures.
ReplyDeleteWe moved to Canada from South Africa recently and arranged a day out with Joe, for my husband Jonathans birthday, who has always wanted to catch a sturgeon. Joe was extremely helpful with making the arrangements, replying to my numerous emails very quickly as well as giving us all the information we needed to make this a fun as well as very safe fishing experience. He has definitely taken time to think about everything needed when running a business of this kind including tackle, snacks/drinks, comfort and safety of both the angler and fish as well as great customer service, I cant recommend him enough. ReplyDeleteFirst, I would like to say thank you, I have had a lot of fun today, What I lack in kayak experience I made up for in the amount of fish I caught. But I owe that to Joe, you gave me great insight and shared your very successful tips. I loved being out there in the yak and on a beautiful day to boot.

Joe are you familar with most kayak carriers. A predator is 34 inches wide and 86 lbs. What would you recommend to haul it on top of a wagon. Likely a bugger to get up there too.

DeleteThe standard J racks are hard for a Predator or other big kayaks as the strain can be quite significant with these bigger boats. I recommend using saddles like the Yakima Mako Saddles. These hug the hull of the kayak and keep it in place very safely. Unfortunately for a wide kayak, you need very wide cross bars in order to get 2 kayaks up there.
To help load take a look at the Yakima Showboat. I use this on my Jeep wrangler, a tall vehicle and it helps me roll my Predator up there with ease.

Purposely using a method that is known to foul hook these creatures is not fishing. I cannot believe that you even go as far as teaching others this disgusting method. I have no respect for you at all now after seeing and hearing about your method. You will ruin Sturgeon fishing for all of us with this and i will be contacting Fisheries about this to express how my fellow fisherman and I feel about it. Please stop using and teaching this method. Be a real fisherman for once.

DeleteBefore you make a fool of yourself and run off telling people things you know nothing about, do yourself a favor and contact local conservation officer Rob Dekany, I'll even provide you with a link to his contact information here. Mr. Dekany is very familiar with the techniques and rigs I use in safely catching and releasing sturgeon and will be happy to give you his opinion.

I would not do anything to harm this species and am in fact working with biologists at the Canadian Rivers Institute to help them study the species and refine best practices for fishing them. Fell free to contact Dr. Matt Litvak there as well if you would like to inquire.
